Top 10 moustaches in 80s cartoons!

It’s MOVEMBER!

That means we get to celebrate the art of lip foliage to raise money for a good cause.

The moustache played an important role in the 80s, perhaps made “cool” by super-hunk Tom Selleck as Magnum P.I….

But wait! We can’t give all the credit to the real-life stars of 80’s television, there were many an 80s cartoon character supporting the crumb-catcher, so let’s count them down from 10 to 1…….

10. Bow, from She-Ra
He wasn’t a major character in She-Ra, perhaps you haven’t met this chap before, but he sported a rather fetching ginger tash.  As you can see, it’s a definitive part of his “look”, alongside the red cape and the oh-so-manly love heart emblem on his chest……………

9. Mandrake, from Defenders of the Earth
Again, this one gets points because it’s so necessary for his “look”. This is a dainty yet serious statement - very precise.  Just like a magician.

8. The Shop Keeper, from Mr Benn
This one is slllllightly sinister, sllllightly scary, yet comical too.  A perfect match for this weird fancy dress shop owner, who runs a shop which transports potential customers into other worlds, straight from the fitting room!

7.  Texas Pete, from Superted
Another evil one.  Personally though, I think Texas Pete could have gotten away with bigger whiskers… he was a big, comical, cowboy character!  But no, he’s opted for a neat and tidy one to try and scare off Superted….

6. Monty, from Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers
Another ginger one! Monty is a mouse, so I suppose his moustache is actually a version of whiskers, but it looks MUCH more like a human’s moustache.  Again - fitting to the character, he just wouldn’t be the same without it!!

5. Ulysses, from Ulysses 31
I tried my best to stay away from combined moustache-and-beard combos, but this one deserved its place.  The moustache itself stands out - it doesn’t really LOOK part of the beard.  Plus, his beard would look well weird without it.
Gordon on the 80s cartoons Facebook page says “Ulysses 31 had the best face furniture!”

4. Max Ray, from Centurions
OK, this is broaching on Tom Selleck territory… do you really think you can win this fight, Max? Well, he’s doing pretty well, this is a serious mo.  AND, it looked awesome on the Centurions Max Ray toy action figure, too.  Well played.

3. Colonel K, from Dangermouse
We’re now in the top 3, so these tashes need to be impressive.  Look no further than Colonel K.  That is BIG.  OK, so he’s a chinchilla (NOT a walrus - common misconception), so he’s naturally furry, but this fuzz makes him what he is.  And, he’s working the silver hair too. Impressive.

2. Man-At-Arms, from He-Man
This is a commanding piece of facial hair.  You must respect this man.  A definite worthy #2 spot.  Kind of weird that his eyebrows are jet black yet his upper lip is bright ginger… you’d think he might dye it or something………….

1. Leoric, from the Visionaries
When you look at this man, what do you see?  His shiny blue armour? The holographic lion on his chest? His impressive shoulder guard things? Nope, you see his tash. This guy is leader of the Spectral Knights.  He can call upon a holographic lion to help him out if he needs it.  And he fights against the Darkling Lords, who ALL have moustaches!!!  He is the only good guy who sports one, so I reckon he secretly knows that the only way to fight a bunch of bristly-bad-guys is to wear the same… only better.  Bet he has a photo of Tom Selleck in his locker…

Who just missed out on the top 10? Porthos from Dogtanian, Jaga from Thundercats, Mr Willmake from Bertha, Mr Baskerville and Dr Macadoo from Pigeon Street, Trader Jones from Charlie Chalk, John “Slim” Griffin from Starcom, Dr Gloom and General Blight from Bananaman, and Paploo from Ewoks.  Sorry guys.

Laughing and giggling (and reminiscing!) aside, this month, Movember, is all about raising awareness and money for men’s health, particularly prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

So, if this blog made you laugh or smile, please share it with you friends to help spread the word.  Or even better, join up, get sponsored, and grow your very own soup strainer! Who knows, you might end up looking like Leoric, Texas Pete, or even Colonel K!  (please send me photos if you do….)

Top 5 scary 80s cartoons

We are all susceptible to scary things when we are young.  Some things, however, are scarier than others.  Some thing stay with us… till we are grown up.  And I’m not talking about the 18 certificate movies that you shouldn’t have been watching when you were 8 - I’m talking about cartoons - those fun, bright and jolly TV shows MADE FOR KIDS.  So let’s count down the top 5, after having some help and suggestions from followers of 80sCartoons.co.uk on Facebook….

Number 5: Trap Door

So, what’s so scary?

The cuteness aside, Trap Door was quite sinister.  A blue creature who is friends with a skull and a spider, living in a castle basement, serving a big monster known as the “thing upstairs”, who is so hideous and grotesque that we’re never allowed to see him.  Not only that, but scary creatures emerge from the trap door in every episode - sometimes a long red tendril that grabs people and pulls them into the dark, and sometimes a hugely unnerving red creature called The Splund who annunciates every word in a very sinister manner, can teleport, has a deep voice but a high pitched giggle, and asks questions like “Tell me…. what do you… taste… like?”!  How to survive the Splund?  Have an oversized needle to pop him with, as demonstrated by the lovely Berk….

Number 4: Venger from Dungeons and Dragons

So, what’s so scary?
If you were asked, when young, to draw the devil… you might well draw Venger.  He has a big single red horn coming out of his head, a long grey face, fangs, red eyes (which could glow) and black bat-like wings with red bits. He was voiced by Peter Cullen (of Optimus Prime fame) who adds an extra chill to the character with his deep gritty tones.  Venger also has a personal spy who takes the form of a scary shadow figure, called “Shadow Demon” and rides a big black horse called “Nightmare”….. enough said really.  Although, he did wear a weird big grey skirt.

Number 3: Fenella the Witch from Chorlton and the Wheelies

So, what’s so scary?
Fenella is evil and she knows it,  She revels in it and is out to meddle and mess with you.  She has a very evil (and Welsh) cackle, and a very scary face which is often shown close up. She moves fast, has little spotted helpers called Toadies, and a scary German spell book called Claptrap Von Spilldebeans.

Number 2: The Moomins

So, what’s so scary?

This one can be slightly controversial.  Personally, I find them cute and cuddly… but there are MANY of you out there that get really freaked out by these little creatures.  Is it their staring eyes? Their little hands? Their shifty glances?

Chris on Facebook admitted: “The Moomins scared the shit out of me”.
Ellyandan on Facebook said: “It’s actually good to read that there is more people out there that Moomins scared I thought it was just me.”

It wasn’t just the actual Moomins that scared children though, other characters within the show were a bit more creepy.  Such as Little My.  She is a creature called a Mymble, and she happens to be quite a feisty one with red hair in a strange bun on the top of her head, a pointy nose and ugly eyes.

And then there is….. The Groke.  This creature sends shivers down my spine…. and then when you see her move…. oh my god, nightmare material!!!!

A big dark monster with staring eyes, a freaky mouth and big hands.  The Moomins are scared of The Groke - flowers and plants die when she is around, as she breathes extremely cold air.  She also moves in a very freaky, glitchy way, and makes scary breathy noises.  However, it is thought she is just very lonely and unhappy…..  awww, poor Grokey!!  Watch the clip from 1.19 and be afraid……

Number 1: Mumm-Ra

So, what’s so scary?
Perhaps an obvious number one, but he’s got the top spot for a reason!  Have you SEEN this guy??  He is a Demon-Sorcerer Mummy, he is Ever-Living (he CAN’T DIE!), he can change his physical form to deceive, he has an evil dog called Ma-Mutt who can FLY, he says things like “Wherever evil exists, Mumm-Ra lives!”, and he can enter your dreams.  That’s enough for me.

David on Facebook said: “Mumm-Ra scared the crap out of me as a kid - and that was before he transformed!”
Mairi on Facebook said: “…when he starts saying his “ancient spirits of evil…” speech, and his sarcophagus starts to open, and the pool in front of him’s bubbling higher, and the gargolyes eyes all light up - eeeeeeeeeeek”

PSAs

“Public Service Announcements”, otherwise known as “lessons” or “morals” or “those bits at the end of cartoons that teach kids valuable life tips” are a funny thing aren’t they?  He-Man had them, Thundercats had them too, MASK, GI Joe, Transformers, Turtles… do a search on youtube and you’ll get some real gems!

For example, here are He-Man and She-Ra telling kids to be wary of anyone touching their body in a way they don’t feel comfortable with:

And these wise words from Man-At-Arms:

“A finger… or an arm… or maybe even an EYE!” Makes me laugh, but in all seriousness these messages must have worked, because I haven’t caused anyone to lose any of those body parts!

Another worth watching, from MASK this time: a warning about getting picked up by someone who might be a vemon agent, or worse…..

GI Joe has some of the best, this one in particular combats that frequent problem of kids finding broken power lines on the road… and wanting to “launch” over them on their bikes…

There are many comedy dubs over these PSAs to be found and enjoyed on YouTube, some better than other, but this one made me chuckle!

Body massage??!!
